SEPARATO
Here is my first typeface I created. It’s called Separato because the lines in the letters separate into a minimalistic form.
About the Typeface
The use for this typeface is for digital titles, names, or branded logos, specifically for web. This typeface is really cool to showcase futuristic and minimalistic themes as well as for specific branding identities. The minimalist design is becoming more and more widely used because of its simplicity and focus on space, which is what the typeface is intended to do.
Typeface Overview
Each deconstructed letter is legible but abstract enough to look like geometric shapes. The typeface in the deconstructed form is ideal for web use and for a more visual identity rather than textual. The constructed form works well with for titles in uppercase that want to be read precisely.
Design Features
The idea for how the features work is that some of the excess, harsh lines are broken down into their simplest form, leaving the letter in a geometric, abstract shape. The letters are broken off and left open instead of fully closed, to give more room for interpretation. This compliments the minimalistic and futuristic themes. For the letter “A” as the value is decreasing into the deconstructed value, the middle stem is slowly disappearing, but the brain is still able to depict that this is the letter “A.” The same thing goes for the letter “B” as well. The hook on the letter “C” decreases in length to minimize the width of the letter, making it simpler.
This is a short video of how the typeface looks in use.
Type In Motion
Here is a video of type in motion from the "Discovery" clip from Big Hero 6 for a school project. It was my first attempt at type in motion. The idea of the project was to take a short clip of audio and translate it into moving text. I decided to go with this scene because I really love the contrast between the two characters and I could really play around with the type.
